Hailing from upstate New York, Justin Jurgens discovered the joy of exploring the outdoors at an early age, spending the sweltering north-eastern summer’s canoeing in the vast expanse of rivers and lakes that is northern Ontario, Canada. His other passion, music, lead him to Purchase College in White Plains, NY, where he played in a touring rock n’ roll band and graduated with a degree in Arts Management. But as people grow and change, so do passions, and as his college career drew to a close Justin found himself longing for new adventures in wild places. Luckily, a few months before graduating college, Justin happened upon a sport that would completely and irreversibly change his goals, lifestyle, and world view: Rock Climbing.
After graduating college, Justin moved to Philadelphia to continue playing music, but by then rock climbing had grown from interest to full blown obsession, and the little voice telling him to move west could no longer be ignored. Climbing, coupled with a growing interest in education eventually led Justin to participate in a 50 day Outward Bound semester course in Colorado designed specifically for aspiring teachers with an interest in pursuing Outdoor Education. Humbled and inspired by what he learned, Justin applied for and accepted an internship with the Colorado Outward Bound School the following summer.
Justin is currently entering into his fourth season with Outward Bound, working with teen-agers and young adults as a Lead Instructor on alpine backpacking, mountaineering, and rock climbing courses in the Rocky Mountains and Joshua Tree National Park. He also worked as an instructor at High Trails Outdoor Science School in Big Bear, California for three seasons, working as the head cook for the second half of his time there!
Justin currently splits his year down the middle, spending the Summer and Fall in Colorado working with Outward Bound, and Winter and Spring in Joshua Tree, guiding in the park and climbing as often possible. Justin began guiding for Joshua Tree Excursions in November of 2016.
